As of April 30th, the ATA Carnet can be used in Peru. This represents a joint initiative between the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to temporarily facilitate the entry of low-risk goods into the country (items for fairs and exhibitions, professional equipment, products for sports, artistic purposes, among others). This tool is part of the management of SUNAT and the Lima Chamber of Commerce, as the guaranteeing entity in the country.
The ATA Carnet (ATAC) is an international customs document used to facilitate and expedite the temporary passage of goods across customs borders. Also known as a temporary merchandise passport, it allows the entry and exit of goods from a country without paying import duties or taxes. It is especially useful for activities such as audiovisual productions that involve the temporary entry and exit of goods.
It is important to note that Peru is joining this international agreement, which includes countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Canada, the United States, Spain, among others.
In Peru, the ATAC can be managed by natural or legal persons. For this purpose, the procedure must be conducted with the Lima Chamber of Commerce, who will provide the user with the requirements for completing the annexes for subsequent submission at the customs of the airport at the destination. For the entry of goods into Peru, with ATAC, it must be submitted at the customs of the airport in the country, where the physical documents will be requested and the verification of the equipment will be conducted, and after that, the process is concluded.
The equipment can be transported in the hold or as cargo. In the case of cargo, the user must arrange with the company providing the service in each country.
Further details on this type of customs procedure can be found in DESPA-PE.00.23 "Temporary importation, temporary exportation, and customs transit using the ATA Carnet".
