Shapaja, at 214 m along the Huallaga River, is an agricultural and fishing district of San Martin.

The district of Shapaja is located at an altitude of 214 meters above sea level, on the banks of the Huallaga River, and it is one of the fourteen districts of the province of San Martin, located in the region of the same name.

It was named after the Shapaja palm tree, which is very common in the area. This palm tree provides edible fruits, and its strong leaves, which are placed together and receive the name of Cumbas, are used to roof the houses.

The inhabitants of the district of Shapaja are mainly engaged in agricultural, fishing, livestock, and commercial activities.
